The final walkthrough and handover often feel like the finish line, but for the client, the warranty period is really just the start of a new phase — one where knowing what’s covered, and what to do if something comes up, actually matters.

What a Workmanship Warranty Typically Covers

A workmanship warranty covers defects in labor and installation — things like a door that doesn’t close properly, a fixture that was installed incorrectly, or a finish that fails prematurely due to workmanship rather than normal wear. It’s distinct from manufacturer warranties on materials and equipment, which are typically handled separately by the product manufacturer.

What It Usually Doesn’t Cover

  • Normal wear and tear from everyday use over time
  • Damage caused by lack of maintenance after handover
  • Issues stemming from changes made by other parties after completion
  • Manufacturer defects in materials, which fall under separate product warranties

Knowing the difference between a workmanship issue and a maintenance issue before you call is the fastest way to get a warranty request resolved.

Making the Most of Your Warranty Period

Document any issues with photos and a clear description as soon as they’re noticed, rather than waiting until several small items accumulate. Most warranty requests move faster when the contractor has clear documentation to reference instead of a vague description after the fact.

The Takeaway

A workmanship warranty is a safety net, not an afterthought — but only if you understand what it covers before you need it. Ask for the warranty terms in writing at handover, and keep documentation of the final walkthrough so there’s no ambiguity if a question comes up later.
